WAHI Interview: Jonathan Milligan

I don’t know about you, but reading about other online entrepreneurs is one of the ways I stay inspired. So today, I’m happy to share with you an interview I had with Jonathan Milligan of Blogging Your Passion. Jonathan has a crazy awesome mission to help 1,000 bloggers turn their blogs into full-time incomes within the next five years.

Wouldn’t it be cool if you were one of them?

I think so! Let’s dive in!

Jonathan Milligan Interview

WAHI: In February 2009, you wrote your first blog post for Blogging Your Passion. Would you share with us a little about your initial purpose? In other words, what was your “WHY?”

Jonathan Milligan BloggingYourPassionJonathan Milligan: I wrote a post called the 4 Hidden Diamonds of a Rewarding Life. This post was inspired by the book Acres of Diamonds that was written many years ago. The four diamonds for me were passion, purpose, productivity, and pace. I wanted to move toward a life filled with all four.

WAHI: I started listening to Dan Miller (48days) years ago when he was still on a local radio station. His insight influenced me to think about business differently. Are there people along the way who have influenced you and your business in some way?

Jonathan Milligan BloggingYourPassionJonathan Milligan: Dan Miller was a key influencer for me from his work on 48 Days to the Work You Love. It was a book about making decisions and taking action. Another key influencer for me was Zig Ziglar. His zest and passion for life was contagious.

WAHI:
Your communication style is extremely personable. When I listen to your podcast, it feels like it’s just the two of us sitting in a coffee shop chatting.

It seems like many writers and speakers struggle to find their voices. Does your “voice” come naturally to you, or are you intentional about it?

Jonathan Milligan BloggingYourPassionJonathan Milligan: I struggled with “my voice” for a long time. I felt I had to become a charismatic, larger-than-life, big personality if I wanted to influence others. The problem is my style is more the easy going, laid back, teacher-type. The moment I decided to just be me was the moment I began to stand out. The more you lean into how God made you, the more unique you become.

WAHI: Inspiration is one of those mystical feelings that writers always seem to be waiting for. Being from Tennessee, when I think of inspiration, I always think of the song Rocky Top. More specifically, I think of the fact that it was written in about 10 minutes in a burst of inspiration and became a huge hit.

Where do you get your inspiration, and how do you keep going, even on those days you don’t feel inspired?

Jonathan Milligan BloggingYourPassionJonathan Milligan: I think of the words of Stephen King, “You schedule inspiration.” In other words, you have a regular time set in your weekly schedule to do creative work. If I wanted for inspiration to strike, I would have half as many blog posts, podcasts, and videos.

WAHI: You offer some courses at Blogging Your Passion University, and I noticed you also offer some mentoring. What product would you recommend to a blogger who is just starting out? And how about to a blogger who just wants to take their blog to the next level?

Jonathan Milligan BloggingYourPassionJonathan Milligan: If you are just getting started with blogging, I’d recommend taking our free 7 Day Launch Your Blog Challenge. Each day you’ll receive an email with one specific action to take. After 7 days, you’ll have a fully-optimized blog ready to go. You can start the challenge here: http://bloggingyourpassion.com/start

WAHI: If you could give one piece of advice to new bloggers, what would it be?

Jonathan Milligan BloggingYourPassionJonathan Milligan: Start before you are ready. Clarity comes from movement. The biggest mistake aspiring bloggers make is not taking action. You can always improve upon actions you have taken, but you can’t improve upon non-action.

I hope you have found this interview to be inspiring as you aspire to work from home. If you are a blogger or thinking of starting a blog, this guy has all the advice you will ever need! I highly recommend checking out his website and listening to his podcasts.

If you enjoyed this interview, let me know in the comments and I keep them coming!

Happy blogging!

  • The secret to success in any business is to deliver a great, compelling product.
  • We don’t need more messages or products or services.  Instead, we need better messages, products, and services.
  • If we are going to create wow experiences, we must become courageous.
  • I believe intuition is the map to buried treasure.
  • Marketing is no longer about shouting in a crowded marketplace; it is about participating in a dialogue with fellow travelers.
  • Understand what’s Not important.
  • Here’s the question I always ask when I face a daunting task: “What would accomplishing this make possible?”
  • All you have to do is take the first step.  You’ll figure out the rest.

The Step-by-Step Guide to make money blogging

Instructions on setting up a self hosted Wordpress Blog

make money blogging

Is it possible to make money blogging? Blogging is a great way to make extra money, or even a full-time income. I launched Work at Home Inspiration just a few months ago and I am already seeing some income from it. My primary source of income is still freelance writing, but my favorite is this blog!

I know a ton of bloggers who are making a living blogging, and you don’t have to have a huge audience to do it. Just a lot of determination and a little bit of knowledge, and you’re on your way!

It’s okay to go into this thing without much know-how. We all start there and usually learn along the way. I learn something new every single day about blogging, and it’s honestly so much fun!
